5 Questions to Ask Before You Say YES:
Not every decision requires a 30-minutes pros and cons list. But consult these questions when you feel pressure, urgency, FOMO, worry about disappointing someone, or that weird pit in your stomach telling you something is off. Just give yourself a quick 60-seconds to ask these questions before you decide.
If nobody else had an opinion, what would I want to do?
If there was nothing on the line, would you still want to do it?
What am I afraid will happen if I say no?
Will someone be disappointed? Will you feel left out or have FOMO? Naming the fear makes it easier to stop letting it quietly decide for you.
If I don’t feel like it, is there something or someone important enough that I am willing to do this anyway?
Sometimes we genuinely don’t want to do something. But the person is important to us, or you know it’s required to get you towards the next step. Will saying yes move you towards what really matters to you?
Which choice respects both present-me, and tomorrow-me?
There are plenty of times present you wants to get out of discomfort NOW… but it will cause judgement and regret afterwards. Don’t take short term comfort over long term regret.
Would I be embarrassed to share this with my best friend….or my mom?!
This is a sure-fire sign you are ignoring your boundaries or values for dopamine in the moment. Choose another path.
You are allowed to pause before you respond.
A yes given under pressure is not a real yes.
